Not only is a Heroku/Rails stack great for standalone applications, it is also a powerful add-on to Force.com whenever the platform reaches its limits. As robust as Force.com is, there are many things that are simply not possible or prohibitively expensive to do on it. Data processing, full text searching, large databases, and high traffic loads are great examples of what Force.com does not support well due ti uts multitenant architecture. In order to solve these issues, developers have long taken to writing scripts or frameworks outside of Salesforce and hosting them somewhere like Amazon Web Services. The problems with that solution are threefold:
- It is not organized. Having a set of PHP scripts living on Amazon Web Services and talking to several Salesforce instances can become very hard to manage.
- It is expensive. Someone needs to manage those servers. What happens when the database goes down? Or when Apache needs updating? You have to pay someone to manage that LAMP stack, and that does not even include the price of hosting.
- It is not consistent. Not having a defined framework and cloud solution means your development processes can become ignored, and each project or application will have different processes behind it. Rails is a strong, consistent framework backed by a large community. It is great for test driven development, which ensures quality and consistency.
Writing a Force.com integration with Rails and pushing it to Heroku just makes sense. The code quality goes up thanks to test driven development being embraced by the framework, and management resources go down thanks to Heroku's platform. And best of all, everything remains on the cloud!
